Sports and adrenaline

Friday

19. 06. 2015

Between June 26th and July 11th, Maribor will breathe in the true sports spirit.

Visitors will be able to cheer at a skydiving championship, a jet ski competition, a chess tournament, rafting on Drava river and a cycling marathon. Those who are more dedicated are invited to attend the sports events, such as volleyball, tennis, boxing and many others.

This year’s highlight will definitely be air racer Peter Podlunšek, Red Bull Air Race Challenge competitor, who will take your breath away with adrenaline pumping aerobatic flights over the Drava river on July 10.

Fun and games

During the festival, Marinko Galič sports center offers volleyball for visitors every day between 9AM and 3PM. On July 4, visit the center to see the Inline Hockey Tournament, which will include some of the best hockey players on rollerblades competing for amazing prizes. For those who are not familiar with the rules of the game, the hockey coaches will be there to give you a brief lesson.

For those who are looking for something different, sports center Ra-ta-ta offers several modern sports activities, such as bumperball, giant table football, lasermaxx, bootcamp, freestyle training, boxing and bodybuilding.

Mladinska street is the place to be for those interested in footsnook (a combination of snooker and football) and tennis enthusiasts.

On the first weekend of the festival, cyclers will have the chance to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Maribor at a cycling marathon around Pohorje, the oldest cycling event in Slovenia, which will include over 500,000 cyclists this year.

For those looking for a challenge, the festival will organize the first BraveRun; an obstacle course aimed to test one’s endurance.

Adrenaline pump

Lent promenade visitors are welcome to check out Blazing, an adrenaline mission that requires jumpers to compete in the air and in the water. Competitors jump onto a huge floating lounge and create the blaze effect, which throws them into the air and into the water.

Koroški bridge in Maribor will host several sports activities, the main one being ropeswing diving off the bridge. The spectators will get a chance to see the competition from different angles, including from the river, since they will be able to rent kayaks and SUP boards. The event will include other sports games and a demonstration by the diving club.

There are more opportunities to get wet! Competitors of the 15th annual diving competition in Maribor will be jumping off the Old bridge in Maribor on the last day of the festival.

The competitive spirit will also take over the annual student raft competition on July 3, which aims to make the exam period less stressful and offer the students a fun bonding experience. Following the next day, there will be the traditional Jet Ski Alpe-Adria Tour 2015, which will complete the two-day fun.

On June 28, skydiving above Drava river will take a lot of courage and knowledge. Contestants will jump from an airplane 1000m in the air and land in the river. The goal is to swim to the shore as fast as possible. This is with no doubt one of the most visited sports events of the festival.

Besides skydiving, Lent will offer another adrenaline-filled experience. Air racer Peter Podlunšek will return to Festival Lent with his unforgettable airshow. An award winning competitor and champion and the Red Bull Air Race Challenge Cup competitor will perform a series of breathtaking stunts and fill the spectators with adrenaline, excitement and a little beat of fear.
