Teatr Biuro Podrozy was founded in 1988 in Poznan, Poland, by Pawel Szotak, artistic director and award-winner in the field of culture in Poland. Always on the lookout for new artistic expressions, his theatre stresses social issues in certain communities whilst focusing on bringing the theatre closer to those who cannot afford it. The inspiration for Carmen Funebre was the war in Bosnia, and other ethnic conflicts in former Yugoslavia. Making preparations for the performance, the creators met several refugees who shared their stories of lost families and homes, which became an inspiration to artistic creativity.
The city has ten million souls, some are living in mansions, some are living in holes: Yet there's no place for us. I saw a building with a thousand floors, a thousand windows and a thousand doors; not one of them was ours, not one of them was ours.
Stood on a great plain in the falling snow; ten thousand soldiers marched to and fro: Looking for you and me, looking for you and me.
